2021 Field Notes

Spring got off to an early start. Field conditions were very favorable and dry early on. So favorable that I wanted to start planting on the 15th of April, but after a family discussion we instead decided to tackle the 2nd of two major tiling projects. The first project was completed last fall. Originally, we had planned to complete both tiling projects over the course of three years starting in the fall of 2020. Instead, the weather continued to stay favorable, and we were able to complete the 2nd tiling project AND was finished planting by 3rd of May. All seed went in the ground in excellent soil conditions. The rest of the year however continued to be dry. Only a few inches total of rain fell in the months of June, July, and August. Temperatures though were moderate. Daytime temps would hit 85, but then cool off into the 70’s at night making the summer a favorable growing season for both corn and beans. Yields at harvest showed those favorable conditions, despite the little rainfall, and our soybean crop was the best I’ve ever seen. Our corn crop was 3rd best crop. Fall harvest and tillage went smooth as well. We were able to get all of our crop out, all fall tillage done, and machinery put away before any bad weather hit. In all, we had a very smooth and accomplished year in 2021, which in turn has also set us up for success in 2022. We are all looking forward to next year.
